Everyone who operates a recreational boat up to 24 meters or a jet ski that can reach a speed greater than 50 knots must have a high-speed certificate from June 1, 2023.
Sail On AS is an approved provider of both the theoretical and practical parts of the high-speed course required to obtain the certificate.
The first thing you must do is complete a theoretical course that ends with a test. You take the theoretical course with us through our online course.
After completing the theoretical part, you can participate in the practical part for recreational boats and/or jet skis. The practical part is participation only and does not end with a test.
When the theoretical part is passed and the practical part completed, the course provider will report this to the Norwegian Maritime Authority. After that, you can apply to have the high-speed certificate issued. Note that you will not receive a physical certificate. During inspections, authorities will access it digitally in their systems.
The course aims to raise awareness and change attitudes. To achieve this, we cover topics such as vessel knowledge, speed phenomena, human factors, high-speed maneuvering and navigation, safety, and planning.
Even if you are an experienced boat operator, we believe the course will teach you something new! The course is not a driving course, but it will still give you the knowledge and awareness you need to make better decisions when operating a boat at higher speeds.
There are no direct requirements for previous experience, but you will get much more out of the course if you have some prior experience with planing boats.
The theoretical part consists of an online course or a classroom course that lasts approximately 6 teaching hours.
When the course is completed, it concludes with a test consisting of 30 multiple-choice questions. 90% of these must be answered correctly, which means a maximum of 3 mistakes.
Once the theoretical part is completed, you can register for the practical part. The practical part is divided into two different sections: one for recreational boats and the other for jet skis.
To be issued a certificate for both, you must complete two separate practical tests.
For the practical part in boats, all you need to do is show up at the agreed location at the agreed time. We provide the boat, suits, life jackets, etc. It is a good idea to bring a hat and gloves if you are unsure about the weather. If it is very windy, you may need to bring a change of clothes after wave driving.
For the practical part on a jet ski, you must bring your own jet ski. It can be shared with up to 3 participants per course. We require the use of a dry or wet suit with appropriate footwear during the session. In addition, you must wear a suitable padded life jacket and helmet. Life jacket and helmet can be borrowed from us. We also have a few wet suits available for loan—let us know if you need one. On a jet ski, you will get wet regardless of weather and wind conditions, so pack your clothing accordingly.
