Environmental focus

During the winter of 2022, Sail On had a special focus on the “E” in HSE – Environment. This means we reviewed all aspects of our events and courses and implemented measures to reduce our environmental impact as much as possible. When you choose Sail On, you are choosing a greener alternative.

We offer 4 types of sailing courses:

1. Crew Course – a beginner sailing course over 2 days or 3 evenings
2. Competent Crew – a beginner sailing course over 5 days
3. Offshore Sailing Course to Skagen – for those with some to extensive experience, over 4 days
4. ICC Day Skipper Course – a 5-day sailing course for advanced sailors, with the option to take the ICC exam on the final course day

Crew Course – An Introduction to Sailing for Beginners

This sailing course is for those who are completely or almost new to sailing and boats, or for anyone looking for a practical introduction to boating as part of the boat license course. The online course for the boat license is now combined with our sailing courses, so you get 2 courses for the price of 1 sailing course.

"Our online boat license course is the perfect combination with our sailing course for those new to boats or taking the ICC certificate as part of our sailing course."

Here you will learn good seamanship, safety, and boat maneuvering, sail handling, sail trim, boat steering, and plenty of sailing. The course is therefore suitable for anyone wanting an introduction to sailing, or for those who simply need to learn proper seamanship and get practical experience as part of the boat license course. You do not need to dream of learning to sail to take this course, although sailing is a major part of it.

The course can be taken as a 2-day weekend course from 10:00–17:00 both days or as a 3-evening course from 17:00–21:00. Check the dates to find a course that suits you.

Courses may occasionally be bilingual Norwegian/English.

Price: 5,990 NOK

Our Sailing Courses

When sailing, you experience the sea from a different perspective. You get closer to the elements and must know what you are doing to contribute as crew. Enjoyment increases when you actively participate in sailing, such as steering the boat, trimming the sails, or following the chart.

Safety, security, and enjoyment are always important on the water and are therefore central in all our sailing courses.

Introduction to Sailing – Beginner Sailing Course

It should be easy to get started with sailing. It’s an amazing activity, and we help you get going and show you the way forward so you can develop your sailing skills.

  • Duration: Approximately 16 teaching hours. Weekend courses run over 2 days, 10:00–17:00 both days. Weekday courses run 17:00–21:00 over 3 days.

  • Course Content: Basic sailing theory, simple navigation, seamanship, right-of-way rules, safety, lookout, helm duties, man overboard (MOB), mooring, and general boat handling.

  • Goal: To participate actively as crew on most sailboats, learn basic seamanship and boat handling, and contribute positively onboard.

  • Prior Knowledge: None required.

  • Books: Recommended: Kompetent Mannskap from Exlibris Skipperens Håndbøker, or Competent Crew from RYA. Books can be ordered online.

  • Food and Drink: Bring lunch and drinks. Coffee and snacks are available onboard.

The online boat license course is now included as part of the beginner course package. You can continue your learning with our offshore sailing course and ICC Day Skipper course. Completing the ICC practical exam can be a main learning goal, allowing you to go from no experience to ICC skipper in a relatively short time.

GKSS Deal:
All sailing course participants are invited to join as crew in our Tuesday regattas at Gåsøkalven Sailing Club, where you receive guidance and training. The goal is that over the season, you become a full crew member on one of the club’s sailboats. Participants are asked to become a club member, help with maintenance, contribute financially, and help maintain a friendly atmosphere onboard.

Boats and Equipment:
Our sailing courses are mainly held on a First 40.7 sailboat or similar (35–40 feet), with 3 cabins, kitchen, and saloon. Life jackets are provided. Bring warm, waterproof clothing and good shoes such as sneakers or rubber boots. Sailing jackets and pants can be rented from us.

All registrations are binding. If you cannot attend, notify us as early as possible, and we will try to find a solution. It’s recommended to have personal travel insurance covering illness or other important cancellation reasons. Small changes may occur. Contact us for any questions.

Course Package:
The beginner course and other sailing courses now include free access to our online boat license course. The natural next step is our offshore sailing course, ICC Day Skipper course, and ICC practical exam. Contact us for more information.

ICC Day Skipper and Competent Crew

  1. Competent Crew takes you from beginner to competent crew and works both for those who are completely new to sailing, and as a follow-up to our 2-day beginner course if you want to become a better sailor and watch leader. Together with our online boat license course, this provides a very good foundation to pass the boat license exam.

  2. ICC Day Skipper is for more advanced sailors who want to take on the skipper role and are considering or wish to take the ICC practical exam. It works well as a follow-up from the Crew Course or Competent Crew, or for those who already have some sailing experience. You must have passed the boat license exam before taking the ICC practical exam on the last course day.

The course covers the entire ICC curriculum for the practical exam. The ICC exam is arranged separately and is usually possible to take on the final course day.

Courses may occasionally be bilingual Norwegian/English.

Price from 12,990 NOK

If the course you want is fully booked, send us an email and we will inform you if a spot becomes available or when new course dates are set.

  • Course Content: ICC syllabus including basic sailing theory, navigation, night sailing, good seamanship, right-of-way rules, safety, lookout, helm duties, man overboard (MOB), mooring, and planning.

Offshore Sailing Course to Skagen

Our offshore sailing course is designed for those who already have some experience and want to gain experience in long-distance sailing on the open sea, as well as navigation offshore and along the coast. This is combined with relaxation and enjoyment in the ports we visit.

The course builds nicely on our Crew Course, Competent Crew, and ICC Day Skipper course, and helps develop necessary experience.

The course can be combined with the ICC exam after completion if you are ready. The offshore sailing course only covers part of the ICC syllabus, so you must have gained the remaining knowledge through previous Competent Crew, ICC Day Skipper course, or personal experience. ICC exam is conducted by appointment.

Courses may occasionally be bilingual Norwegian/English.

Price from 11,990 NOK

Offshore Sailing Course – 4–5 Day Sailing Course for the Adventurous

This course is designed as an addition to our other courses, so that participants gain the necessary experience sailing on the open sea and along the coast in safe and controlled conditions.

The course builds nicely on our Beginner Course, Crew Course, and ICC Day Skipper course, helping to develop the experience needed for longer passages.

Duration: The course runs for 4 days, starting at 17:00 on the first day. We sleep aboard the boat and have a maximum of 5 participants.

The purpose of the course is a combination of long-distance sailing and relaxation in ports. We start with an overnight sail to Skagen, operating in watch shifts. This gives us a full afternoon and evening in Skagen focused on relaxation and enjoyment. On Day 3, we sail along the Swedish coast toward Smøgen or Väderöarna, with time to relax in the harbor before returning to Melsomvik on the final day.

Course Content: Navigation, night sailing, good seamanship, right-of-way rules, safety, lookout, helm duty, watchkeeping, MOB, mooring, and planning. Spinnaker sailing if weather permits.

Prerequisites: Some previous sailing experience is an advantage, ideally equivalent to our 15-hour / 2-day "Introduction to Sailing" course, but it is not required.

Books: Competent Crew and Day Skipper from Exlibris Skipper’s Handbooks – can be ordered through us when you register.

Goals: Gain experience on long passages, participate actively as crew on most sailboats, take responsibility for watches, and eventually skipper your own or a rented boat. Can also serve as partial preparation for the ICC exam.

Food & Drink: We purchase collectively and share costs for food, drinks, and harbor fees per participant. Dining onshore is pay-as-you-go. Maximum additional cost ~1,000 NOK; past experience shows ~600–700 NOK.

We can accommodate a few ICC practical checks on the last day, or by appointment. Let us know if you wish to register for this when signing up.

Course Packages: The offshore sailing course can be part of a larger package including Boat License, Beginner Course, Competent Crew, ICC Day Skipper course, and ICC practical exam.

GKSS Deal: All course participants are invited to join as crew on our Tuesday regattas at Gåsøkalven Sailing Club, where you receive guidance and training. The goal is for you to become a full crew member during the season. Participants must join the club, possibly help with practical maintenance, contribute financially, and help maintain a pleasant sailing environment.

Boat & Equipment: Courses are primarily held on a First 40.7 sailboat (40 ft) or similar (35–40 ft). Boats have 3 cabins, a kitchen, and a salon. Life jackets provided for all.
