D5L Recreational Skipper Course

D5L Recreational Skipper Course Across Norway – When and Where You Want

Sail On is an approved provider of D5L and D5LA by the Norwegian Maritime Authority.

We are currently developing a completely new D5L concept combining an online course with in-person sessions.

The online course comes in 6 modules, complete with lessons and exercises that you can work on anytime, anywhere on your PC, tablet, or phone—unless you need space for a larger chart or other materials.

The in-person sessions will take place over 2 long weekends or 6 afternoons. To qualify for the in-person sessions, you must have completed all modules and exercises in the online course.

Additionally, we offer 1 full day and 1 afternoon/evening for practical training on larger recreational boats, totaling 2x8 hours of practice on navigation instruments, night sailing, and handling larger boats. The practical test is offered on day 3 for those who cannot document 3 years of experience operating recreational boats over 8 meters.

Exams are taken after each session.

Until then, you can register your interest at d5l@sailon.no.

The D5L course can also be used for those who need Fishing Skipper Class C and D6.

After completing D5L, you will be offered the opportunity to take D5LA Worldwide.

In the future, we will also offer D5 Coastal Skipper as an additional option for those who need it.

All our D5L courses are structured with each subject as separate modules, with mini-exams shortly after. If the current schedule does not fit your life, it is possible to split it up to make it work.

Use the contact form, email, or call us to register or if you have any questions.

D5L Recreational Skipper Course Information

The course spans 120 teaching hours and leads to a certificate allowing you to operate recreational boats up to 24 meters in length in major coastal waters, and includes the following main subjects:

  • Navigation

  • Navigation instruments theory with radar observation

  • Navigation instruments – practical onboard

  • Maritime rules and bridge watchkeeping

  • Ship knowledge

  • Safety (first aid, fire, rescue, emergencies)

  • Technology / Engine theory

  • Vessel handling – practical onboard

*This certificate also provides rights for Fishing Skipper Certificate Class C when the required sea time and safety training requirements are met.

**Can be replaced with an approved basic safety course for seafarers (60 hours) – which covers the safety training requirements for subordinate crew on commercial vessels. This also allows you to convert your D5L certificate to Fishing Skipper Class C, and operate boats commercially, such as passenger transport up to 12 passengers, with additional Passenger and Crisis Management training + minimum VHF course.

Prices: We have not set prices for the course yet. They will be announced when the first dates are published.

Exams: The exams consist of a written test after each subject, for a total of 6 exams. To receive the certificate, a minimum grade of 3 (three) must be achieved in all subjects. Practical modules are marked as participated.

Sea time:

To be issued a Recreational Skipper Certificate, the following sea time/boat experience is required:

  • You must have operated and regularly used a vessel longer than 8 meters (up to 15 meters) for at least 3 years. This must be documented by either the chairman of a boating association, the police, harbor authority, fisheries inspector, insurance company, or with a boat logbook.

  • Alternatively, you can have at least 12 months of effective sea time on vessels over 15 meters, which can qualify for issuance of a deck officer certificate, i.e., D5 (coastal skipper) or higher. Sea time qualifying for a deck officer certificate must have been earned in a position involving deck duties such as bridge watch, mooring, loading and unloading operations, safety maintenance, and emergency procedures.

  • Or, you can pass a practical test with a course provider approved to conduct practical testing – NMKS has such approval.

In addition, a declaration of satisfactory health, vision, hearing, and color perception must be submitted, in accordance with regulations regarding medical examinations for seafarers.

Certificates are issued by the Norwegian Maritime Authority.

A fee is payable to the Norwegian Maritime Authority for issuing the certificate. Check www.sjofartsdir.no for prices and more information.

Verification of rights up to 24 meters:
As a result of changes in the qualifications regulations, holders of the Recreational Skipper Certificate can download a confirmation to document the same rights as holders of the Recreational Skipper Certificate. Click here.

We cooperate with NMKS, which is approved by the Norwegian Maritime Authority for our D5L Recreational Skipper Courses. Through them, it is possible to advance to D5LA, as well as convert the D5L certificate to D6 and/or D5 if additional training is desired.

Terms:
We follow the same registration terms as NMKS. This includes the right to cancel courses if there are too few participants to conduct the course, or under other circumstances beyond the control of NMKS or Sail On.
