The boating licence
Required for everyone born after 1 January 1980 who drives a boat over 8 metres or with an engine over 25 hp. You register for the exam yourself, with the boating licence register.

We run the course where you are
If you run a boat club, sports club, school or college, we are happy to come and hold the course with you: classroom sessions combined with the online course, and the exam at the last session.
High-speed certificate
Anyone driving a leisure boat up to 24 metres or a jet ski that can go faster than 50 knots needs a high-speed certificate. Sail On is an approved provider of both the theory and the practical part, for boats and for jet skis.

ICC and D5L
The ICC is an international certificate for leisure boats up to 15 metres. Sail On is approved by the Norwegian Maritime Authority for both the theory and the practical test.

Practical check
You show an approved examiner that you handle a boat safely, under engine, sail or both. Think of it as the driving test for a car.
Health declaration
You fill it in on the ICC application itself.
D5L Fritidsskipper
A certificate for leisure boats up to 24 metres. Sail On is an approved provider and runs the course together with NMKS: an online course in modules, sessions and practice aboard. Prices and dates are published when the first courses are set up.

What people wonder about before they sign up.
Who can take the boating licence?
Anyone who turns 14 by the exam. You can take the test from 14, but you get the licence itself when you turn 16.
Do I need a book?
We recommend «Båtførerprøven i teori og praksis» alongside the online course. The book follows the same structure as the course, chapter by chapter.
Charts, dividers and plotters are lent to you on the classroom courses and at the exam.
What if I am not happy with the online course?
The online courses have a 30-day satisfaction guarantee, or your money back.
What if I fail the exam?
You can take it again after 14 days. It costs a fee of 495 kr, paid through the boating licence register.

The dates for next season are published as they are set. Email us about the course you are interested in, and we will let you know when it is on.
